General Information
FRIENDS Association for Children has survived for more than a century because it understands the importance of being responsive to the changing needs of those it serves.
FRIENDS serves over 3,500 low and moderate income residents in Richmond, Virginia each year with subsidized services.
We work to create a neighborhood solution for children and their families living in areas of Richmond where the support to succeed is needed most.
Our clients are usually single parents, caring for 3-5 family members in their households, trying to survive on about $25,000 a year. We strive to create opportunities for these families.
Creating opportunity happens in partnership with your neighbors. The key to FRIENDS survival and growth are its partnerships with:
- United Way of Greater Richmond and Petersburg
- Richmond Redevelopment & Housing Authority
- Better Housing Coalition, and
- Numerous private foundations
FRIENDS is also a member of the Child Welfare League of America, the nation’s oldest and largest membership-based child welfare organization.
Despite joining hands and efforts with our partners, each year FRIENDS is challenged to cover the gap between client fees and operating costs.

Among others, our valued partners include the United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg and the Child Welfare League of America.
Equal Service Opportunity
