Charles & Cherry Peters!
Charles and Cherry Peters are planning an unusual retirement: one that involves going to the office 7½ days a week. They're jointly taking on director-ship of FRIENDS Association for children, where Cherry Peters will work full-time as Executive Director. Charles Peters will volunteer his help for 2½ days a week. Cherry retired in January from SunTrust where she was a technology business analyst. Charles retired in 1997 as Director of the Richmond Department of Community Development. Both have been active in community endeavors, but they have never taken on something like this before. Cherry Peters became acquainted with FRIENDS Association for Children in 1978 while serving on the allocation committee for the United Way. She was the committee's official liaison with Friends. Six years ago, she joined the Friends board. Charles has been chairman of the United Way's Homeless Action Council and was a founding member of the boards of the Richmond Better Housing Coalition and Virginia Motorcyclists Against Cancer, among other activities. "I think it'll be fascinating," Charles Peters said of his new ties with FRIENDS Association for Children. "We want to leave the organization very strong financially." "This organization is too wonderful and too well-kept a secret," Cherry said. "We can't let it languish. It needs to thrive."
